Prairie Star Quilt Guild

Laura Hartrich

I’m Laura.

I’m an artist working mostly in fiber, particularly quilts.

Some of my quilts are heartfelt gifts made especially for a beloved recipient. I hope these quilts are used and washed and squished and picnicked on.

Some of my quilts are art works with themes of reflection, acceptance, time, and memory. These quilts will probably never be used on a bed and that’s okay.

I live just outside of Chicago with my family and cats. I’m currently going back to school after a 15 year hiatus. I love being back in school, and I especially love making work for my undergrad art classes.

Laura will present one lecture.

Labels as a Love Letter

This lecture will be presented at our Tuesday, August 27th, 2024 9:30 AM Meeting

Laura will talk about how labels factor into my quiltmaking practice.  She will share lots of images and discuss technique, inspiration, and motivation for creating labels as detailed and unique as the quilts themselves.

Creating a label is an important step in the quilting process. Labels provide documentation and preserve stories that could otherwise be lost. In this workshop students will consider both content and technique for labels. They will learn about various techniques to make a label in a range of simple to more complex. They will spend time drafting labels for current or future quilts, working in small groups to encourage and inspire each other. Students will learn that labels can be as unique as fingerprints, and be empowered to find a style that works for them.
