Maday Delgado

Maday is a prolific art educator, published artist, Janome America Artisan and speaker based in the Midwest, committed to bringing innovation and artistry to the forefront of the work she creates. Her mission is to nurture artistic platforms across cultures and generations to foster creative work, while finding ways to minimize our environmental footprint. Learning from cultural textile traditions and exchanging powerful stories, continues to be a source of inspiration that she hopes to share with all. Her goal is to unify students with different skill sets and share her love of art and vibrant textiles in a sustainable manner.  She combines paint, weaving, hand-stitching (her favorite) and machine sewing and embroidery to infuse her creations with energy, paying homage to her Cuban upbringing. She loves the art of collaging and storytelling with new and pre-loved textiles. She favors working with up-cycled materials and scraps as a way to honor the environment. Maday’s work has appeared in international publications: Curated Quilts 2023, Uppercase magazine (2022, 2020,) the book Quilted (2019), Love Patchwork & Quilting Magazine (2022-23) and periodicals in her home state. She also presented virtually to the design students at the Indian Institute of Art & Design in New Delhi, India in August 2020 and currently teaches at Folk Schools, Quilt Shops, Quilt Shows and is an instructor at Madison Technical College. She was also a guest at the Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims, which airs April 2024

Maday will present two lectures

The Art of Curves

This lecture will be presented on Monday, June 24th, 2024 at 7:00 PM.

Few shapes have the commanding presence that curves create in any artistic medium. Curves are found in ordinary objects and the natural world. Organic, improv curves offer timeless design options sure to delight makers and spark their imagination. Maday discusses how to create dynamic curves using simple tools.

The Memory of Stitches: Revisiting old cloth

This lecture will be presented on Tuesday, June 26th, 2023 at 9:30 AM.

The memory of stitches is a concept that I examine in my work and in the workshops that I lead. We will talk about how we can consciously welcome sustainability and honor those who came before us, while implementing small changes in our creative practice that lead to big impacts, personally and financially.

Workshops

The Chaos of Perfection

Tuesday, June 25th, 2024

6-9pm

$55 + $20 Kit Fee = $75 total

University of Illinois Extension 535 S Randall Rd, St. Charles, IL 60175

The Chaos of Perfection tapestry pays homage to sustainability and connection. Made entirely from scraps, the intention is to work slowly and welcome the twists and turns that a project takes organically without worrying about the end result. Perfection is elusive. The emphasis is on creative well-being, exploring colorful compositions and acceptance, to inspire more joy in our stitching journey.

During our workshop, we will create portable, “two-layered” collaged panels using raw edge appliqué techniques and big stitches with a variety of threads.  Hand-stitches invigorate and texturize a project in a manner that a sewing machine simply can not. Dedicating time to working slowly allows us to connect to our stitching practice without technological distractions. We will also discuss different finishing techniques and practical applications to include in every day items. Different samples will be available for participants to study and/or be inspired from.

The Kit Fee for this workshop is required. Kit includes fabrics and some of her favorite notions for hand sewing that are pertinent to the technique that is being taught.
