Prairie Star Quilt Guild

Community Projects

Prairie Star Quilt Guild Mission to Provide Service to the community comes in many different forms.

We have various groups with different initiatives and would love to have you join in our mission.

Many hands make light work.

Quilts of Valor

The Mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor®. Finished quilt tops  or finished quilts (check with us on current sizing needs) are collected for awarding by Land Of Lincoln Quilts of Valor®. Help with any step of the process is always accepted. We can guide you in awarding your own QoV during our bi-annual award ceremony held in July of non-quilt show years.

Quilts of Valor is sewing! First Tuesdays we’re at the Moose Lodge in St Charles starting at 9am. Third Tuesdays we’re at the VFW, Montgomery on River St starting at 9am. Help us recognize those who served our country by piecing 58” x 68” quilt tops (preferred size, minimum is 55″x65″), doing longarming or finishing up the binding!

Port Pillows for Chemo Patients

Port pillows provide relief to chemotherapy patients. They are attached to the underside of a crossbody seatbelt and positioned over the patient’s infusion port.  Port pillows will be given to Phil’s Friends, a local organization that supports those affected by cancer.  Kits are available, although you can also use fabric, batting/stuffing and velcro from your own stash.

Kids Quilts & Pillowcases

We offer kits of all types and we encourage you to be creative! Try something new or help us out by finishing projects with machine quilting, long arming or binding. We can find the perfect project for you!  If you’d like to create from your own stash we will accept any finished size but sizes roughly 24″ x 40″ , 36″ x 40″, 40″ x 60″ are the most in demand. We accept donations of neutral or childlike fabrics and batting.  We collect finished quilts, tie blankets and pillowcases for delivery to Ronald McDonald House as well as local hospitals, police and fire departments. Please attempt to keep items for donation free of animal hair and fragrance free. We add a PSQG label to all quilts and wash all items prior to donation drop off.

NICU Blankets for Central Dupage Hospital

These 36” x 48” flannel and minky blankets help keep the isolate darker and quieter.

When babies progress they may be moved to cribs and the blankets can be used there also. To protect the babies, the blankets are heavily washed and do wear out so there is always a need for additional blankets. Create your own using the tutorial below or ask us for a kit.

Fidget Quilts

These mini quilts are meant for use by senior and children with special needs.

There are no specific rules as your creativity is the best ingredient. Use your fabric stash or ask us for a kit.

Quilts and Comforters for Residential Hospice

Residential Hospice in Lisle is interested in quilts and comforters of any size (please no fleece) for their patients. These items can be used and gently worn, but please do not pass along items that are stained or torn. Pin a note to the item if it’s been washed (unscented detergent, no softener is preferred). They will also accept fidget quilts and marble mazes. Contact Sheila C.

Pet Beds

This project helps keep a little more fabric out of the landfill as well as helps comfort to animals in local shelters awaiting adoption. At this time we are not collecting scraps for stuffing beds or finished pet beds. We have fabric for you to make your own bed OR ask Peggy B. for a sewn unstuffed bed that’s ready for you to stuff. Please review the Shelters & Fosters in need to find a location in need that’s convenient to you.

Blankets for Dupage Care Center

Sue Ann R. collects new throws & lap blankets for DuPage Care Center. Located in Wheaton, many of their long term care residents are those in need. They’ve requested industrial washer safe blankets in fleece, knit, crochet, double layer flannel or flannel backed quilts without batting. Any size is welcome but wheelchair friendly is appreciated.
